What is Upper GI Endoscopy?
The Upper GI Endoscopy (UGIE) program is a visual database
of common and essential pathologies of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The program
contains 83 full-motion, color video clips with educational information for each.
Interactive Drama Inc. (IDI) in conjunction with Capital Education Corporation, developed
this multimedia program under an unrestricted educational grant from Astra Merck, Inc.
The program is designed to facilitate the detection and diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal tract pathologies by clinicians at all levels of training. A user can learn to distinguish between upper GI lesions through immediate, direct comparisons of endoscopic views. This approach promotes the learning of unfamiliar pathologies through instantaneous, learner-controlled viewing, and enhances clinical knowledge and performance through learner-initiated viewing of educational text sequences. The programs individualized multiple-choice exams for each video clip allow the learner to evaluate and monitor personal progress.
Accessing the Educational Information
The information in this program is accessible through two modes: Study
mode and Exam mode. Study mode allows the learner to select from
pathologies grouped by location and disease process, and compare the educational
information associated with each one. The educational information is arranged into five
categories:
Description:
provides a description of the condition shown in the endoscopic video
References:
lists a few key references specific to the condition
Diagnosis:
includes clinical signs and symptoms, pathologic features, other general information, and differential diagnosis
Treatment:
offers some general recommendations for initial management along with the role of endoscopic therapy, if warranted
Prognosis:
describes a general prognosis and/or natural history of the condition
Exam mode provides a learner-controlled comprehensive test of the pathologies and the information associated with them. The system randomly selects endoscopic views to test the learner. Up to four multiple-choice questions concerning the pathologys location, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis are presented to assess the learners knowledge. A cumulative score over all items in the exam is maintained for the learner.
This product is endorsed by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE)
