Melanie Benn is a quadruple amputee (bilaterally through both knees and bilaterally below each elbow). She lost her limbs to meningococcemia, a rare blood infection, while on Christmas break from college. Melanie has mastered the use of both upper- and lower-limb prostheses, has learned to drive an adapted car, and has continued her studies. Melanie�s mother, Candie Benn, is an environmental consultant in San Diego. Candie provided daily care for Melanie during the first year of recovery and rehabilitation. Barbara Vasbinder is Melanie�s friend and live-in caregiver. She assists Melanie with her prostheses, accompanies her to college classes, and supports her quest for independence.
