Melanie Benn is a quadruple amputee (bilaterally through both knees and bilaterally below each elbow). She lost her limbs to meningococcemia, a rare blood infection, while on Christmas break from college. Melanie has mastered the use of both upper- and lower-limb prostheses, has learned to drive an adapted car, and has continued her studies. Melanie’s mother, Candie Benn, is an environmental consultant in San Diego. Candie provided daily care for Melanie during the first year of recovery and rehabilitation. Barbara Vasbinder is Melanie’s friend and live-in caregiver. She assists Melanie with her prostheses, accompanies her to college classes, and supports her quest for independence.
