What is Flexible Sigmoidoscopy?
The Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (FlexSig) program is a visual database of common and essential pathologies of the lower gastrointestinal tract. The program contains 95 full-motion, color video clips with educational text for each view. The program has two modes: one to study the sigmoidoscopic video clips and educational information, the other to test your ability to identify pathologies and assess your knowledge about them. You can move back and forth between these two modes with the click of a mouse button.

This multimedia program facilitates the detection and diagnosis of lower gastrointestinal tract pathologies by clinicians at all levels of training. The educational methodologies designed into the program teach pattern recognition through immediate, direct comparisons of pathologies; promote remembering new pathologies through instantaneous, learner-controlled viewing of the pathologies, and enhance clinical knowledge and performance through learner-initiated viewing of instructional text and exam questions for each view.

Study Mode
This mode allows the user to study and review the information available from the visual and textual database in preparation for the Exam mode. Additionally, the study mode functions as a reference guide for common pathologies of the lower GI tract.

Comparing Pathologies
An important educational feature of the FlexSig program is the ability to easily compare different pathologies instantly and repetitively. The "Quick Compare" storage buttons hold video clips for quick and easy comparison of pathologies.

Accessing the Educational Information
Six buttons allow you to access the following educational information about each video clip:

Description:
provides a description of the condition shown in the sigmoidoscopic video
Clinical:

describes clinical features that are typical of the condition
Pathology:
provides a description of the characteristic histology and pathologic features of the condition
Treatment:
offers some general recommendations for initial management along with the role of endoscopic therapy, if warranted
Prognosis:
describes a general prognosis and/or natural history of the condition
References:
lists a few key references specific to the condition

Exam Mode
Exam mode allows you to test your knowledge of the pathologies and educational information in the FlexSig program. Five questions, multiple-choice and true-false, concerning diagnosis and other aspects of the video segment displayed are provided by the system to test your knowledge of the pathology in question.

The FlexSig Exam is designed as a learning-to-criterion exam; that is, every question must be answered. You may take as many sessions as you like to complete the exam. Your scores are not used in the issuance of the certificate of completion, nor are they available to anyone but you. You may delete the cumulative scores in your file at any time.
