HIV/STD Risk Assessment

a Virtual Conversations® professional education program

Currently the only effective means of slowing the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is preventive education concerning high-risk behavior. Primary care providers are in a unique position to identify and counsel individuals who are at high risk for infection.

Interactive Drama has developed a series of Virtual Conversations® programs designed to help clinicians practice HIV/STD risk assessment and counseling skills by talking with virtual patients. The HIV/STD series consists of four patients with clinical profiles that are typical of real patients whose sexual practices put them at high risk for disease:

Angie Sanchez is a twenty-four-year-old art student and bartender. Most of her social life revolves around the eclectic crowd that gathers in the bar where she works. Sex, alcohol, and drug use are all a part of her free-spirited lifestyle. Angie is seeking medical attention for a recurring yeast infection.
Ryan Williams is an eighteen-year-old college freshman. He is an excellent athlete and takes care of himself physically. Ryan has decided to pledge a fraternity and finds he is more sexually active than ever before. He is seeking medical attention because he is experiencing painful urination.
Katie Briggs is a twenty-six-year-old CPA for a large accounting firm. She recently ended a significant relationship and now is dating multiple partners. Katie has come to the office to refill her prescription for birth control pills.
Geoffrey Cronin, age forty-five, is a partner in a prestigious law firm. A homosexual, Geoffrey enjoyed two decades of sexual liberation in the 60s and 70s. He started practicing safe sex as many of his friends began to die of AIDS. He has come to be tested for HIV.

A field test of the series by 43 primary care residents at Georgetown University Hospital proved that clinicians who use the programs become more comfortable with sensitive sexual history-taking and more adept at counseling patients about high-risk sexual practices. The development of this program and research activities were funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
